About
OBS is free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and the macOS version supports macOS 13.0 or newer, with separate downloads for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Its features include high performance real time video and audio capturing and mixing. You can create scenes from multiple sources, such as window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards, and switch between an unlimited number of scenes using custom transitions. The audio mixer offers per-source filters like noise gate, noise suppression, and gain, and supports VST plugins.
OBS also includes tools for producing content. You can choose from customizable transitions or add your own stinger video files. Hotkeys can be set for actions such as switching scenes, starting or stopping streams or recordings, muting audio sources, and push to talk. Studio Mode lets you preview and adjust scenes and sources before they go live, and Multiview gives you a high level view of your production, where you can monitor up to 8 scenes and cue or transition to them with a click. The settings panel offers a wide range of configuration options, and the modular Dock UI lets you rearrange the layout or pop out individual Docks into their own windows.
For further customization, OBS provides an API that supports plugins and scripts. You can use native plugins for high performance integrations or scripts written in Lua or Python that work with existing sources. The website also notes that developers in the streaming community contribute features, and that plugins and scripts can be browsed or submitted in the Resources section.
