About
Obscura is a VPN designed to keep your activity private by architecture rather than by promise. According to the website, Obscura's servers relay your connection to exit servers but cannot decrypt your traffic, which is end-to-end encrypted via WireGuard to the exit server. Exit servers, run by Mullvad, connect you to the internet without seeing your personal information, and Obscura masks your real IP address when relaying to them. The service states it does not log your IP address and requires no name, email, phone number, or credit card; you log in with a randomized account number and can pay with Bitcoin over the Lightning Network or Monero.
The website also describes a stealth protocol built on QUIC, the technology behind HTTP/3, intended to make Obscura's traffic blend in with regular internet traffic so that network filters are less likely to detect or block it, helping users keep unrestricted access. To support its claims, Obscura says its app source code is on GitHub, that it plans to offer reproducible builds, and that the app displays the current exit hop's WireGuard public key so users can check it against Mullvad's published keys. The service costs $8 per month and each account includes five simultaneous connection slots.
