About
OpenMTP is a free, open-source app that transfers files between a Mac and an Android phone over USB. It runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs and requires macOS 10.14 (Mojave) or higher. The site says it copies files 5-6x faster over USB than Android File Transfer, supports files larger than 4GB, and lets you move multiple files in one go. Phones, watches, cameras, and Meta VR headsets that connect over MTP are supported, including Samsung, Garmin, FujiFilm, and Meta devices.
To connect, you plug in your phone, choose File transfer on the phone, and OpenMTP detects it. No Wi-Fi setup or account is needed. You can switch between internal memory and SD card from the toolbar, and use a split pane to view your Mac and phone side by side and drag files between them. You can also rename files and folders directly on the phone, pick grid, list, or dark mode, and use keyboard shortcuts to copy, paste, rename, and navigate.
OpenMTP is positioned as a safe, transparent alternative to Android File Transfer, which Google no longer supports for Mac. The site states that OpenMTP is MIT-licensed, that releases are signed and notarized by Apple, and that the app does not collect personally identifiable information. Older Macs running macOS 10.13 or earlier are supported only with OpenMTP v3.1.15 in Legacy MTP mode.
