osu! is a free-to-win rhythm game. This release, currently known by the codename "lazer," is described as the future and final iteration of the osu! game client, marking the beginning of an open era. The Mac version supports macOS 12 and later on both Intel and Apple Silicon.

The project is under constant development, and the developers aim to keep it stable. Players are encouraged to install this release alongside their stable osu! client. The project will continue to evolve until most users prefer it over the previous "osu!stable" release.

osu! also supports user-created gameplay variations called "rulesets." Developers can build rulesets using the osu! beatmap library, game engine, and general UX, and templates and examples of custom rulesets are available.
