About
Pale Moon is an open source web browser built on its own maintained platform and rendering engine, Goanna, and is available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. It focuses on customization, security, privacy, and extensibility. Users can fully theme the browser and install add-ons, which are written in XUL and can modify core browser functions and the user interface. Pale Moon also supports legacy native plugins such as Java and Flash through the Netscape Plugin API (NPAPI). The browser is built from its own independently developed source, receives regular security updates, and shows a clear indication of a site's identity and security level.
Pale Moon keeps everything in a single process, which the developers say protects data security and makes the browser lightweight. It natively supports FTP, RSS/Atom feeds, and XSLT transformations, and uses the native DNS protocol rather than DNS-over-HTTP. The browser contains no ads, telemetry, or data-gathering, and has no DRM or A.I. integration. Its default search engine is DuckDuckGo, its default geolocation service is IP-API, and its start page, start.me, can be changed to any page the user chooses.
Pale Moon is free to download and use, and is developed as a community project. It is designed for reasonably modern hardware and can use graphics hardware (GPU) acceleration. Because it closely follows web standards while deliberately excluding some draft features and Web APIs, some websites may not work out of the box and may require a secondary browser.
