About
PDF Pals is a native AI PDF assistant for Mac. You can chat with one or more PDFs, summarize long documents, and check answers against the cited source pages. It supports scanned PDFs and complex forms through its OCR engine, and it has no file size limit.
Your documents stay on your Mac. Files are never uploaded, and your library is stored locally rather than in a cloud vector database. You can use local models or your own API key for providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and OpenRouter, and Ollama and LM Studio are also supported. API keys are stored in the Apple Keychain, and all your data is kept in a local SQLite database that is easy to back up.
PDF Pals is designed for researchers, legal professionals, and developers. Researchers can summarize papers, extract key arguments, and compare findings across PDFs. Legal professionals can review contracts and case files and trace each answer back to its source. Developers can ask focused questions about technical documentation, specifications, and e-books. PDF Pals requires macOS 13 or later, and v2 requires macOS 14 or later.
