About
Phosphene lets you add your own video wallpapers to macOS. Drag a video into its library or menu bar, then select it in System Settings → Wallpaper, and macOS plays it on the desktop and lock screen alongside its built-in collections. It supports MP4, MOV, HEVC, H.264, and ProRes videos your Mac can decode, lets you set wallpapers per display and per Space, and provides frame-accurate, gapless looping. Playback pauses on battery, dimming, occlusion, and thermal limits, and processing stops after 30 seconds of idle time. The app includes no video catalog.
Phosphene can also convert Wallpaper Engine wallpapers from the Steam Workshop into video wallpapers. You pick them in the app's Wallpaper Engine section and choose Make Videos, after which each becomes a looping video you can select in System Settings. Wallpaper Engine itself runs only on Windows Steam, and the site mentions a separate free app from the same developer, Sevoflurane, for bringing that Steam setup to a Mac. Phosphene is free and open source under the MIT license, runs on macOS 26 Tahoe on Apple Silicon and Intel, and uses a private Apple framework, so macOS updates may occasionally require a compatibility fix.
