About
Pinwheel is a Mac app for designing color systems and design tokens. It can serve as the source of truth for a design system or convert Figma variables into code. Color sets create stepped gradients using OKLAB, OKLCH, and color-space-aware blending, and color aliases reference other colors so semantic colors update automatically. Pinwheel imports formats including Design Tokens JSON, Figma, Sketch, CSS, and asset catalogs, and can export to multiple formats at once, such as SCSS, Design Tokens JSON, and SwiftUI color enums. It can also run from the command line and offers namespaced groups and name formatting for exported tokens.
Pinwheel includes on-the-fly WCAG 2 and APCA contrast checking next to the color picker, and it can produce repeatable accessibility reports saved as HTML or PDF. These tests can run from the command line and be integrated into build scripts or unit tests. The app also offers one-click utilities to fix colors that shift appearance when moved between tools or into code.
Pinwheel works offline, is priced at $9 USD plus tax with no subscription and a 30-day free trial, and requires macOS 15 or later. The developers describe it as privacy focused, with no ads, no analytics, and documents not stored on their servers.
