About
Postgres.app is a full-featured PostgreSQL installation packaged as a standard Mac app. It includes everything you need to get started, along with the popular PostGIS extension for geo data. It has a user interface and a convenient menu bar item, and you never need to use the command line to run it. Advanced users still get the included command line tools and header files.
Postgres.app can install minor updates automatically, so you receive bugfixes as soon as possible. After you move it to your Applications folder and double-click it, you can click "Initialize" to create a new server. The server then runs on your Mac with default settings: host localhost, port 5432, your system user name as the user and database, no password, and the connection URL postgresql://localhost. You can connect with the included psql client or with a graphical client such as pgAdmin 4 or Postico.
The website also includes guides for connecting to a Postgres.app server from applications written in PHP, Go, Python, Ruby, and other languages and frameworks, including Django, Flask, Rails, and SQLAlchemy.
