About
Proton Mail is an encrypted email service based in Switzerland that aims to keep your conversations private. Unlike free services such as Gmail or Outlook, which can technically scan inboxes for targeted ads, AI training, or data sharing, Proton Mail uses zero-access encryption, meaning it never sees your inbox on any plan. It is funded by paid subscribers rather than user data, and its free plan is supported by subscriptions that add extra features and storage. The app also blocks email trackers and includes PhishGuard to flag known phishing attempts and suspicious emails.
The Mac app works with the rest of the Proton Mail service and is open source and independently audited for security, as are all Proton services. You can import messages, calendars, and contacts from Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, Apple, and other providers, and for Gmail you can keep new emails syncing automatically and send from your Gmail address without leaving Proton Mail. Additional features include categories to sort incoming mail, a subscription manager, hide-my-email aliases, scheduled sending, undo send, and snooze. Paid plans add more storage, extra email addresses, custom domains, and other features.
