About
Refine is a grammar checker for Mac that runs Gemma 4 locally on your Mac, so it works offline and keeps your text private. It checks grammar in the Mac apps you already use, such as Mail, Pages, Notes, and Slack, and can check as you type or only when you press a shortcut. Every suggestion comes with a plain-language reason that points to the words you wrote and shows the rule it's based on. It supports 36 languages and 59 varieties.
Refine also includes a Floating Editor, which you open with a shortcut to rewrite text with presets like Professional or Concise, translate it, or have it read aloud. Snippets expand as you type, and custom prompts let you steer each check. You can set your own keyboard shortcuts and, if you want more powerful models, connect your own API key, which is stored in your macOS Keychain. Plugins connect Refine to Obsidian, Neovim, Sublime Text, and PopClip.
Refine is free, requires no account, and runs on macOS 14 or later. You can download it directly or install it with Homebrew.
