About
Rowel is a free, open-source secret manager for macOS that keeps passwords and passkeys, cards, passports, SSH keys, API keys, and .env files in one vault. The vault lives on your own devices and opens with your fingerprint. There's no account and no Rowel cloud. Your master password is stretched into a key on your device using Argon2id, and items are encrypted with AES-256-GCM. Values stay hidden until you click them, and the window blanks when you look away.
Rowel also works offline, and the vault is a single encrypted file on your disk. Sync is optional and off by default. If you turn it on, Rowel encrypts the vault on your Mac before uploading it to your own Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud. Your iPhone can pick up the sealed file, and no one in between can read it. Entries merge across devices, and you can organize items into Personal, Family, and Work compartments under one password.
Rowel's browser extension fills passwords, one-time codes, and passkeys in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi. On iPhone, AutoFill offers your items above the keyboard, behind Face ID. Rowel requires macOS 13 or later.
