RStudio is a free, open-source development environment for R. You can write code, explore data, and share results in one place, with support for other languages R programmers use in their projects, such as Python and SQL. The editor offers code completion, diagnostics, and syntax highlighting. You can run code line by line or all at once, and navigate with code folding, function jumping, and document outlines. A built-in data viewer lets you sort, filter, and search data frames, and the Environment and Connections panes track session objects and link to your databases.

RStudio also supports the full path from analysis to publication. You can write Quarto and R Markdown documents in a Visual Markdown Editor, and publish Shiny apps, reports, and dashboards to Posit Connect or shinyapps.io directly from the IDE. Additional features include Git integration, project management, an interactive debugger, and package development tools.

Posit AI is an optional add-on for $20/month, with a free trial. Posit Assistant is a conversational AI agent embedded in RStudio that reads your live R session context, and it includes background code completions. Posit states that code and data are never stored or used for training. RStudio itself remains free, and using it without AI costs nothing.
