About
RustCast is a free, open source launcher for macOS, built for keyboard-first workflows. From a single hotkey, you can search and open installed apps, do calculations inline, browse clipboard history, search emoji by name, convert units, and find files. You can also type a query followed by ? to search Google or a custom search engine. The app has no subscriptions and no telemetry, and it is released under the MIT license.
RustCast also lets you define modes that run shell scripts, so one keypress can change your environment. The site gives examples such as a presentation mode that hides notifications, a dev mode that starts Postgres and dev servers, and a focus mode that silences Slack. Shell aliases and custom commands can also be run directly from the launcher. Its rustcast:// URL scheme (v0.7.4+) lets scripts, Shortcuts, browsers, and other tools show the launcher, open an app, or quit RustCast.
Settings are stored in a single TOML config file, which covers fonts, colors, hotkeys, search engines, aliases, and haptic feedback. RustCast creates a default config on first launch. You can install it with Homebrew (brew install --cask rustcast), from a DMG or ZIP on GitHub Releases, or by building from source.
