About
Sage (SageMath) is a free, open-source mathematics software system licensed under the GPL. It builds on many existing open-source packages, including NumPy, SciPy, matplotlib, Sympy, Maxima, GAP, FLINT, and R, giving users their combined power through a common Python-based language or directly through their interfaces and wrappers.
The project's stated mission is to create a viable free open-source alternative to Magma, Maple, Mathematica, and Matlab. The website points to resources for learning it, including the books "Sage for Undergraduates" by Gregory Bard and "Mathematical Computation with Sage" by Paul Zimmermann et al., along with documentation, a tutorial, videos, and a Zulip chat.
Sage can be run through SageMathCell, through CoCalc, or installed locally; the site lists macOS binaries for 3-manifolds and Linux/macOS binaries via conda-forge, while Windows users are directed to the Windows Subsystem for Linux. The project is funded through donations handled via its GitHub organization with Open Source Collective as fiscal host.
