About
Shotcut is a free, open source, cross-platform video editor for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It supports hundreds of audio and video formats and codecs thanks to FFmpeg. No import is required, which means native editing, plus multi-format timelines, resolutions, and frame rates within a project. Frame-accurate seeking is supported for many video formats.
Shotcut also offers device and transport options, including Blackmagic Design SDI and HDMI for input and preview monitoring, screen, webcam, and audio capture, and network stream playback. It supports resolutions up to 4K. Its interface includes multiple dockable and undockable panels, such as media properties, a recent files list with search, a playlist with thumbnail view, and a jobs queue. Assets can be dragged and dropped from the file manager. Playback can be controlled with the J, K, and L keys, and in and out points can be set with the I and O keys.
Shotcut was originally conceived in November 2004 by Charlie Yates. The current version is a complete rewrite by Dan Dennedy, who built it on MLT to exercise MLT's cross-platform capabilities. Versions are named by date, and new versions are released about every two months.
