About
Spectra is a free spec-driven development (SDD) toolkit for Mac, made up of a desktop app and AI workflow skills. It keeps your project on track from proposal to archive by storing your specs and change history in structured files that any AI tool can read and build on. Proposals set clear goals, tasks, and testable success criteria for each change, which helps prevent scope from growing and keeps AI-generated code aligned with your intended design.
The app provides change management for creating proposals and tracking their artifacts through the full lifecycle of each change. Spec documents can be browsed and managed with requirement tracking, scenarios, and full version history, and full-text search finds content across specs, changes, and archived items. Spectra works with Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and Google Gemini, and it can generate skills and commands for your AI tools. It supports a workflow of discuss, propose, apply, ingest, and archive.
To get started, download the free app with no account required, then point Spectra at any project folder. It creates an openspec directory for your specs. On macOS, Spectra can be installed via Homebrew with `brew install --cask spectra-app`. The app is available for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
