spires

About

spires is a macOS app for inspirehep.net and arXiv.org. It downloads and saves PDFs with one click, lets you search INSPIRE using its old-style query syntax (such as author, title, date, and journal terms combined with "and" and "and not"), and lets you read your favorite arXiv new listings. Its sidebar content syncs across your Macs, iPhones, and iPads through iCloud Drive. The companion app inspire.app provides similar access on iOS.

The Mac version adds further features. A BibTeX watcher monitors a LaTeX file: when a citation such as \cite{author:2018xxx} is added, the matching BibTeX entry is added automatically to the referenced .bib file. A %%list folder-name line in a LaTeX file places its bib entries in a named playlist in the app's sidebar.

Setup involves choosing a directory for saved PDFs in the preferences pane, since the default is ~/Desktop. The app's source code is available on GitHub, and it states that it does not collect personal data.
