Steuererklärung.app is a Mac app for filing taxes electronically with ELSTER, the official German tax portal. Its interface is modeled on the familiar paper ELSTER forms, so users can find their way around quickly. The app includes context help for many questions and a built-in plausibility check that verifies completeness before submission to the tax office. Taxpayers can file for private individuals (income tax return) as well as for freelancers and business owners, covering the income surplus calculation (EÜR), trade tax return, VAT return, VAT advance return, and the summary report (ZM). Your tax data is transmitted directly to the tax office and otherwise stays on your own computer. An ELSTER certificate, available free of charge, allows digital signing and fully paperless submission.

The app is priced fairly: the 2025/26 form package is included in the purchase price for new customers, while forms for earlier years can be added through in-app purchases. There is no automatic subscription, and prior-year data can be carried over. It is built as a native macOS application compatible with macOS 10.13 through macOS 26 and runs natively on M-series Macs, and it integrates with GrandTotal, Receipts, and Umsatz.
