About
TmpDisk is an open source RAM disk management tool for the Mac, published and maintained by CosmicGlue. It installs as a status bar app, and you can use its menu to create new TmpDisks, eject existing ones, and click a disk to open it in Finder. RAM disks use your Mac's memory to create virtual hard disks. They can be any size, limited only by your total memory, and they are very fast.
TmpDisks are temporary. Files stored on a TmpDisk are permanently deleted when the disk is ejected or the computer is shut down or restarted, so there is no need to clean up temporary files. The website suggests TmpDisks for saving large files such as photos while editing, downloading and extracting zip files, storing temporary logs and files, and easily cleaning up tmp files.
Version 2.3.0 adds folder syncs, which copy a source folder's contents to a RAM disk when it is created. You can save changes back to the source using the save icon in the menu, the tmpdisk save command, or an optional auto-save schedule, and you can choose to save, discard, or be prompted on eject. Version 2.3.0 also includes a standalone command-line tool that can create RAM disks without the GUI app running, and an option to automatically eject volumes when the app quits.
