About
Tropy is a research tool for managing archival photos. It turns photos into items, so you can work with your sources instead of files named IMG_5261.JPG. Its customizable templates let you describe each source and capture your own subject expertise, and you can organize items with tags and lists to fit your project. Annotation tools let you transcribe documents, select image details, and adjust photographs to see your sources more clearly.
Tropy can export your research as JSON-LD, CSV, or directly to Omeka S, and you can create your own export plugin for other formats. Core plugins add options such as exporting items as a ZIP archive or to Zotero, importing CSV files, and importing IIIF manifests. Tropy saves research data in SQLite, a format the Library of Congress recommends for preservation. It is free and open source, and it runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Tropy is an independent project developed by RRCHNM, the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH), and Digital Scholar, and it is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Its source code is freely available on GitHub.
