About
Ukelele is a Unicode Keyboard Layout Editor for macOS that lets you create or modify keyboard layouts without manually editing XML-based files. Using a graphical interface, you can drag and drop characters directly onto keys. The site notes that the latest version works with macOS 12.0 and later, and that Ukelele supports older macOS versions through previous downloads.
Ukelele also lets you assign multiple-character strings and create "dead keys" that modify subsequent keystrokes. It is aimed at anyone working with diverse scripts and characters. To find special characters for dragging onto keys, you can enable and use the Character Viewer in System Preferences.
Ukelele is written by John Brownie of SIL and is currently provided under a freeware license, with future versions planned under an open source license. Keyboard Juggler, a companion app for moving layouts in and out of installation folders, has its functionality incorporated into Ukelele from version 3.3 onward.
