UnnaturalScrollWheels is a Mac app that inverts scroll direction for physical scroll wheels while keeping "Natural" scrolling on trackpads. In macOS, toggling "Scroll direction: Natural" in Mouse settings also changes the Trackpad setting, even though they are separate options. This app makes physical scroll wheels scroll opposite to what the settings show, without changing trackpad scrolling. The project notes that most older solutions no longer work reliably, if at all, in Catalina.
To install, use Homebrew with `brew install --cask unnaturalscrollwheels`, or download the latest .dmg from the releases page, mount it, and copy the app to your Applications folder. The app requires accessibility permissions to "Control your computer." These permissions let it intercept scroll events, invert them, and modify their deltas to disable acceleration and apply your settings.
Once you hide the app from the menu bar, you can reopen the application to display the preferences window, which temporarily shows the menu bar icon again. The project is licensed under GPL-3.0.
