About
UTM is a free, open source Mac app for running operating systems on your Mac, including Windows, Linux, macOS, and classic systems. On Apple Silicon, it uses Apple's Hypervisor framework to run ARM64 operating systems at near native speed. Slower emulation covers Intel x86/x64 and other processors, including ARM32, MIPS, PPC, and RISC-V. You can also emulate older systems that ran on PowerPC, SPARC, or x86, and run multiple instances of macOS on an Apple Silicon Mac.
UTM is built on QEMU, a widely used and actively maintained emulation and virtualization project, and it can also use Apple Virtualization. It is designed for macOS only, and it looks and feels like a Mac app. You can create, configure, and control virtual machines from AppleScript or the utmctl command line tool, which supports actions such as starting, stopping, suspending, taking snapshots, and connecting USB devices.
UTM is available on the Mac App Store with the same features as the free download; the App Store version offers automatic updates. For gaming, UTM supports DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 on Windows 11 and Vulkan 1.3 on Linux, though game compatibility is ongoing work.
