About
Vernier Spectral Analysis is a free app that makes it easy to incorporate spectroscopy into biology and chemistry labs. Students can collect a full spectrum and explore topics such as Beer's law, enzyme kinetics, and plant pigments. The user-friendly interface walks students through the data-collection process with on-screen instructions for simplified Beer's law or kinetics data collection.
The app can collect full spectrum absorbance or % transmittance data in less than one second. Built-in analysis tools include data interpolation and curve fittings, and a calculated columns function can help determine the order of a kinetics reaction. Users can also view a color strip on full spectrum graphs to understand color transmission, and Advanced Full Spectrum Mode can be used to show the relationship between absorbance and % transmittance or to observe a Stokes shift.
On macOS, the app requires macOS 11.7 or later and connects to compatible spectrometers via USB or Bluetooth. Supported instrumentation includes the Go Direct SpectroVis Plus, Visible, UV-VIS, and Fluorescence/UV-VIS Spectrophotometers, and the Go Direct Emissions Spectrometer. Sample experiment downloads, a list of supported instrumentation, and instructional screencasts are available on the website.
