About
Volume Control for macOS lets you adjust the volume of Apple Music, Spotify, Doppler, Swinsian, and your display using your keyboard's volume keys. It is free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license, and it is notarized so it installs without workarounds. The app is the spiritual successor to iTunes Volume Control, which began in 2012 because AirPlay speakers follow a music app's volume rather than the Mac's system volume.
When a supported player is playing, the volume keys change that app's volume; otherwise they adjust system volume, and holding the Command key inverts this behavior. You can customize the volume step size and hide the volume overlay if it is distracting, for example while watching movies. Monitor and TV speaker volume can be controlled through BetterDisplay or Lunar. The app works on Ventura and newer, including macOS 26 and 27.
Installation is a matter of downloading the notarized release, unzipping it, and dragging it into Applications, or installing it with Homebrew. The app requires Accessibility and Automation permissions to control other apps, and the Troubleshooting section covers common issues, such as other apps taking over the volume keys.
