About
volumeHUD is a simple macOS app that brings back the classic volume and brightness HUDs. The developer created it because macOS Tahoe replaced those indicators with small popovers in the corner of the screen that are hard to see and disappear quickly. The classic HUDs show the level when you change it and then go away.
Launch the app to start it. Opening it a second time shows a window where you can set it to open at login, configure HUD preferences, quit, and see when an update is available. Brightness support arrived in version 2.0. It is off by default, experimental, unsupported, and works only on built-in displays. As of version 3.0, volumeHUD hides the system HUD by intercepting the volume and brightness keys. A safety check disables key interception if the level does not change after a key press.
The developer recommends installing with Homebrew (brew install dannystewart/apps/volumehud) so updates are handled automatically. Notifications and Accessibility permissions are optional but recommended. Accessibility is needed for full functionality, and the app works without it with some limitations. The app is feature-complete and no longer under active development. The developer is not accepting pull requests, and updates are limited to bug fixes and macOS compatibility.
