About
WhatRoute is a network diagnostic utility for Apple Macintosh computers. Its primary function is Traceroute, and it can also perform Ping, Domain Name Service queries, and Whois queries. It can monitor the traffic to and from your computer, and it uses a Geo-Location service to show a geographical view of the paths your packets take across the Internet. The geographic locations come from the GeoLite City database, so results are sometimes inaccurate, though they are generally good enough to give a sense of the Internet's geography.
WhatRoute can pass locations to Apple Maps or Google Maps for a more detailed view than the map included in the software. It is a Universal Binary application, supporting Intel x86 as well as earlier Motorola 68K and PowerPC hardware.
WhatRoute was first developed in 1996 for MacOS 7.5.3, when no other Macintosh software could perform Traceroute or Ping. Apple included WhatRoute with MacOS 9 in 2001. Apple's later Network Utility covers most of WhatRoute's functions, but the author has continued to update WhatRoute following user requests. The developer, Bryan Christianson, accepts donations to support ongoing development and maintenance.
