About
WhyFi lives in your macOS menu bar and monitors your Wi-Fi signal, router latency, internet quality, and DNS. Click the menu bar icon to see signal strength, noise floor, SNR, transmit rate, router and internet ping, jitter, and DNS lookup time, with green, orange, and red indicators showing whether each part of your connection is good, degraded, or broken. WhyFi checks your connection in layers (Wi-Fi from your Mac to the router, the router's LAN latency, and internet WAN latency) so you can see which part is causing a slowdown. Its Radar feature helps you find a stronger signal by walking around with your laptop, and a channel scanner shows congested Wi-Fi channels. The app also includes a speed test with bufferbloat detection, one-click DNS switching to Google or Cloudflare, captive portal detection, and the option to export a shareable stats image or a plain-text diagnostic report to paste into ChatGPT or Claude.
WhyFi costs $10 and requires macOS 13 or later. It runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. All sales are donated to Jet Set Petz, a charity in Bali that vaccinates and sterilises street dogs and cats.
