About
XKey is a Vietnamese input method (bộ gõ tiếng Việt) for macOS, built entirely in native Swift with a SwiftUI interface and compatible with macOS 12.0 and later. It supports Telex, VNI, and Simple Telex typing styles, can detect the style automatically, and offers Unicode (UTF-8), TCVN3 (ABC), and VNI Windows encodings. It can run in two modes: the default CGEvent mode, which requires no setup, and an experimental Input Method Kit mode (XKeyIM), which the site says works more smoothly in Terminal, Spotlight, and the Address Bar.
Beyond core typing, XKey includes Quick Telex, Quick Start Consonant, and Quick End Consonant shortcuts for faster input, along with Macro text expansion, Smart Switch for remembering a language per app, and experimental spell checking with a personal dictionary. Built-in text conversion tools handle case changes, encoding conversion, and removing diacritics. A Debug Window shows the input method's activity in real time, and the app offers auto-update.
XKey also provides quick translation via customizable shortcuts, supporting over 30 languages through providers including Google, Tencent, and Volcano. Translated text can replace the selected text, be copied to the clipboard, or appear in a popup. According to the site, XKey runs entirely locally and does not collect user data. It is released under the MIT license.
