About
Yap is free, open-source dictation for macOS. Press a shortcut, speak, and Yap pastes your words into the app you're using, from your terminal to your browser. You can set the shortcut to a key combination or a single modifier.
Transcription runs on your Mac using Apple's Speech framework, and audio stays on your Mac. Yap doesn't require an account or an API key, and it has no telemetry. Transcripts are saved locally, where you can search them and copy them again. Once macOS has the speech model for your language, you can dictate without a connection.
Yap runs on macOS 26 (Tahoe) with Apple Silicon and can be installed with `brew install yap-app`. Frigade, the team that built it, uses Yap to prompt coding agents, write emails, and send Slack messages, and open sourced it.
