About
Zettlr is a free and open source app for macOS 13.0 or newer, and it is also available for Windows and Linux. It supports writing at every stage, from initial notes to journal submissions and book manuscripts. Your files stay on your computer, with no forced cloud synchronization and no telemetry. The only time Zettlr connects to the internet is to check for updates, and you can disable that check.
Zettlr works with your reference manager. It supports Zotero, JabRef, and Juris-M, and it offers over 9,000 citation styles. For writing and publishing, its profile system, powered by Pandoc, exports papers with a template in one click. It can also create presentation profiles for Beamer, reveal.js, and PowerPoint. For note-taking, it includes a snippets system with variable support and tabstops, along with first-class support for the Zettelkasten method, including note IDs, internal wiki-style links, and a graph view.
Zettlr lets you choose how much WYSIWYG you see, and it renders LaTeX math equations and Mermaid charts. You can adjust the interface through many settings and custom CSS.
